After watching numerous people at my local station parking in the disabled bays (with blue badges) and then running for trains laden with bags and laptops I figured I may as well apply for one. ThumbDown

My defence is that I also have Meniere's Disease (probably caused by the RA!!) and use a walking stick. That gives me one hand to carry bags or anything else (brollies etc). On bad days I have problems even holding my stick, my hands are so bad. On very bad days the MD kicks up too (as happened last week) and I wobble around like a drunk, leaning to one side. Because of the RA it takes me a time to get ready in the morning which means I get to the station after all the parking spaces have gone and I have a 5 minute walk from the nearest car park so it's not much fun.

It would help me to park nearer to shops, train stations etc simply so I don't have to walk so far on a bad day and not have to carry things with my free hand (did I mention the free hand is the worst hand?) too much of a distance.

What do you think are my chances? It'll be Birmingham City Council I'm applying to and my GP is very supportive.

Hi

I applied for a blue badge 6 months after diagnosis - when I was getting progressively worse. I got one without any problem at all.
My understanding is - as RA will not be cured - we qualify!

Good Luck

You go for it! Im thinking about it myself. My rhuemmy nurse said to me that they are for the persons use and not the car registration as they used to be so if you are in another car then you can use it then. He also said I didnt have to use it all the time, just on bad days (most of the time at the mo then!!!) Good luck let me know how you get on!

lots of love

Cheers folks. I've kind of gotten past that stage now where I don't like to ask for anything or be treated differently. I'm fed up struggling when I see see wide boys using their nan's badge ThumbDown.

I'll let you know how I get on but this is Birmingham City Council I'm dealing with and - well, it's a long story. I used to work for them *rolls eyes*.

Hi Mairead,

If you receive DLA you may find that in your Local Authority (council) that you are automatically entitled to a Blue Badge. I received mine prior to receiving DLA and had to go for an examination, but again it depends on the area you live in as each Local Authority will have it's own criteria.

I too get annoyed when I see other people who are clearly able bodied using a Blue Badge, especially when they are depriving a disabled person a parking space. I think there should be a whistle blowing scheme, as Blue badges are clearly being abused.

Good luck and hope you're successful,

love,

Barbara

I applied for a badge a few months ago and they wrote to my GP who called me in to go through the form. When I left he said I should receive the badge shortly. However I have since heard that I do not qualify as I am not in receipt of dla. I can appeal but need to send more medical evidence. As my GP supported my claim I am not sure what they want so am still struggling without it. My rheumy consultant said that they have really tightened up on claims and if you can walk further than 50 yards you do not qualify!
Hope you have more success

Thanks all. That's what I'd read, that if you can walk more than 50 yards you don't qualify. Well I can walk more than 50 yards but not without a stick! I don't receive DLA either but I have great skills in complaining and kicking up a stink. My name is already mud in the city council. I'll keep you all up to date.

Hi Mairead,

I recieved mine after an examination when I was not in receipt of DLA, and basically stated that although I can sometimes walk more than 50 yards, I experience pain and discomfort, and like you, need a walking stick and sometimes crutches. Go for it girl and appeal!!

love an well wishes,

Barbara

I submitted my application together with some supporting letters which proved the RA was also causig me pain in the knees and feet. The form specifically mentioned 'problems balancing' so I elaborated on that too and the fact I use a stick in support. When I realised how far 50 yards was I realised there's no way I can walk that distance without my stick without the fear of going over. Also if my hands are particularly bad it's very painful for me to use my stick anyway. Fingers crossed.

Then I found out it's currently taking them 3 months to process new applications. Welcome to Birmingham City Council *rolls eyes*.

I too would be interested to seeing the outcome as I have been thinking of applying for one. I was under the impression you had to be on full mobility re the DLA which I'm not.
There are days however when I could cry when I think of how far away the car is!
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

I've just had my renewal form from Birmingham City Council for my badge,

Even if you get don't get DLA you can apply, and certainly in the Birmingham form there's a large section to fill in for this.

I was told I'd have to wait 3 months when I originally applied for mine, only to get a letter a week later to take to a post office to pick one up.

Hope you hear soon Mairead, and as always don't forget to put how things are on the worst days.

Best wishes

I do hope, you get your badge, because I know you deserve it. 3 months to wait seems a very long time.

I went through a tortuos process this year to renew my badge. I have had mine for 10 years and never had any problems renewing it, although I have never been on DLA.
This time round it was really hard. Both my GP and rheumatologist wrote letters, which were ignored. I was then called up infront of a panell, where they made me walk along a corridor and up and down stairs. It was really awful After a lot of huffing and gruffing I now have my badge until 2013. Had I not got it, I would have gone to my MP, I was so annoyed.

I can`t help thinking of all the people, who claim benefits on false pretences. I was not even asking for money, just asking for a blue badge, that enables me to go out in the car alone and park near my destination. Having RA should be a reason enough to get it. After all it is a progressive illness, which over the years become more debillitating. It certainly has with me.

Well i didn't get the badge. The template letter quite rudely stated that I was not eligible because I wasn't too ill to use public transport and/or walking was not a threat to my life nor caused my health to deteriorate. Well their bloody letter certainly caused my health to deteriorate! I'm absolutely fuming.

I'll be appealing. It took them three months to assess my application in which time my condition has deteriorated. Their application form doesn't appear to match their assessment criteria. The form asks whether I can walk 50 yards without pain or whether I have problem walking (ie problems with my balance). There's nothing in the form stating that walking must detrimental to health or life. I used to do legal work and assessed application forms for funding so i'll be pulling this one to shreds. I'll also be asking for a copy of their assessment criteria and if they refuse to supply it I'l hit them with a Freedom of Information request and copy in my councillors and MP.

Their customer charter states they'll respond within a month, it took them thre months. I reminded them of this when I made a follow up call. I may take this to the ombudsman as it's a breach of customer charter.

They messed with the wrong woman this time.

hi Mairead,

really sorry to hear you have to go through this.

i'm worried about renewing mine next April as i know things have changed from when i first applied.

i need a wheelchair for any distance and was first given it as i have Osteo in my knees which have progressively got worse over the past 3 years ... since then i now have RA and i use a stick for short distances although the pain in my hands make it difficult at times ... so wondering what to expect when the renewal form arrives.

please let us know how you get on and wishing you good luck,

Suzanne x

Hi

Sorry to hear you have been turned down for a blue badge. I think different authorities must have different guidelines. I applied for my badge and was awarded it within two weeks of them getting the application. Good luck with your appeal.
